House of RubyJ Stitched by the women of the hills

Six thousand feet above the plains, in a valley called Avalon, a needle goes in and comes out again. That small, patient motion is the whole of our business.

Every piece on this site began in a room behind that ridge.

Now in Avalon

Welcome

An old craft, carried carefully into a new room

House of Rubyj exists because a skill that had been kept alive in Kumaoni kitchens for four generations deserved a wider room to sit in — and because the women who kept it alive deserved to be paid properly for it.

Every piece we make is counted stitch by counted stitch on hand-woven linen, by a named woman in a named village. Nothing is machine-embroidered. Nothing is hurried. What we sell is not a cushion; it is a quantity of one woman’s careful attention, and we would like you to know exactly whose.

Four letters a year

One at each turn of the season: what is being made, who is making it, and what the valley looks like that month. No discounts, no urgency, no noise.
